So I set up another small tank (30g). I wanted to get it cycled faster and planned on taking all of the gravel out of another well established tank anyway. I took most of the gravel and put it in the new tank. I also put in about 7-8 gallons of water from the other tank and put the filter from the other tank on the new tank. So I think the new tank should be ready almost immediately. I wanted a bigger filter on the established tank so I put a new one on that tank. I'm going to do some testing but hopefully I didn't go too far in getting the new tank ready. I'm sure that tank will be fine but I hope I didn't remove too much from the old tank. Thoughts?

You removed most of the substrate and the filter from the established tank? I'm almost sure it's going to crash.

I kind of wondered about that but I can switch it back in about 1 minute if I need to.

all you have to do is put "some" of the old filter media into the new filter.
same with gravel.

I know this is probably dumb to say but here goes.... Everyone always tells you just be patient with your tanks! If you wanted to speed up the process you should have taken out a much smaller portion of gravel from the old tank to keep both of them going, and in the new tank started using a sort of bacterial quick start say like api's or such. But still wait a couple of days at least to have it all cycle through a couple of times! I know it's annoying but in the long run it will be better! Happier the fish are the better your tank will be!

There really isnt a reason why I had to get that tank ready quickly except for the usual desire to get more fish. As far as the gravel in the old tank....I wanted to remove it all anyway. I just happened to be setting up this other tank at the same time so it seemed logical to use it to jumpstart this tank. I'll probably take it all back out at some point in the future and replace it with something I like more. I think the old tank should be fine though. I left in the other decorations and most of the water and the old filter is back on it now.

Just tested both tanks. I tossed a couple of goldfish in the new tank earlier today. Both tanks tested just slightly high for ammonia and zero for nitrites. But the new tank was about 5 for nitrates and the old tank was about 40....maybe a little higher. 40 and 80 look almost the same to me on the test chart. I think I'll wait a day or two and do another water change on the older tank. Thoughts?
