Wandering around Home Depot today looking for plumbing supplies for my tank and ran across Philips LED light bulbs. They have an outdoor rated floodlight, 16w, 850 lumens, claimed 4200k and a standard par 38 base, $55 each. I was thinking three or four of these guys built into a custom canopy over my 210g would be cool. Any thoughts? Here is a link to a similar light, they do not have the "outdoor" version on their website, it has better output and whiter light. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053#BVRRWidgetID

I think I'm going to pick one up and see how I like the light.

i think it shud be okii ..
im lookin at duin the exact same with my next tank that im planning at the moment.

itll be my first DIY lighting so id let the professionalls chime in and take control of your Q

I bought an EcoSmart 18w/850 lumens light last night. Hooked it up to an elcheapo reflector I had laying around and put it over my 110g that is running, these lights will be for my 210g. Anyway, the light seems very bright and white just looking at it but I do not like the yellow cast it has. I'm going to exchange it for the Philips brand I had originally planned on purchasing - I went with the EcoSmart instead as the life expectancy was longer and it was $10 cheaper. I did take some pics, will post them tonight and provide a comparison of the bulbs.

A couple of pictures with the EcoSmart lights. The first is with a 30" T5 HO strip light with actinic bulbs and the LED on the right. The LED is about 6" above the tank. The second is with a cheapo 24" T8 strip light on the left , LED on the right. The last is LED only. As you can see the LED is very yellow and has a narrow beam, but it is bright. This light is rated at 18w/850 lumens.

I have returned the EcoSmart bulb and will try the Philips as I originally planned.

I do not know your budget. Those Spots look pretty powerful....try a differnt reflector and more distance from the water. The spots I have seen seen to be designed as hanging fixtures rather than on the glass. The reflector in the 12 watt fixtures I swear by have very advanced relectors that are designed to sit in a canopy.

No budget but I don't want to just unnecessarily throw money at things (or at my electricity bill). I was thinking of setting them up a little higher, possibly using something to diffuse the light, maybe the plastic panels used for in ceiling florescent lights. I like your idea of a different reflector too. I'm going to play around with a few different things after I pick up one of the Philips bulbs. I'm thinking the Philips bulb may have a wider beam based on looking at the LED arrangement in it and the reflector. It is also whiter according to the kelvin scale on the box......we will see.

The made for aquaria stuff has powerful blue lights to help balance the spectrum. http://www.marinedepot.com/Ecoxotic...ixtures-Ecoxotic-XX08200-FILTFILDLK-4-vi.html Here is the link to what i use. Four of them would do the job! I have a 48x24x30 tank and currently run a 36-48" doublebright and one module with a Tru Lumen white and blue Moonlight setup that runs 24/7. I am adding one more module within the next two weeks. The Modules are amazing!
