i love those fish, the bulky males with the big nauchel humps and blocky bodies, flowing finnage look awesome but i read they were complete terrors when they mature, but then i also read that they are relatively 'ok' in a large tank (over 300 gallons).

can someone who have kept them in extra large community tanks chime in on their experience? thanks!

They do well in overstocked communitys where they can't pick on the same fish all the time, i know someone on this forum who has one in a 6x2x2 with flowerhorns, jags, oscars etc and he says that the Midas is the weak link.

Overstocking is not the way to go.... An appropriate sized tank is the key... A 300 should be fine given the tank is at least 8ft long.. Also growing out the midas from a small size with other fish will help he will get used to having tankmates..

How well would they do with other co species like chancho, festae, etc? The footprint of the tank is 8x4 and 30" high, planned to get about 30 2 to 3" fish of various nature most robust and dwindle down to 10 or so males.

I have a 9.5" female midas in a 150g community with a freddy, a proteus pike, small clown loaches and 3 bn plecos. The pike was a juvie when I introduced it and the freddy was only a few inches long as well. You don't always need a massive tank for a midas to play nice, sometimes you get lucky.
My midas has always grown up with me introducing all kinds of fish, in tighter quarters than now, so I would imagine that has helped a lot. I have introduced mostly cichlids too.

agreed great advice , i was worried they would be like a dovii or umbee or udo and kill everything no matter what, i'm going to give it a shot!

I was just debating wether or not to put my 16 in Midas (the biggest one I have ever seen) in my new 220 that I am setting up. I want to do a big predator tank, but I am afraid his is too much of a killer. He has broken 6 in diameter terra-cotta pots that were in his tank and he reguarly tries to splash all the water out of his tank. When ever I am cleaning his tank he litteraly attacks my arm (he has drawn blood too) he doesn't seem to be afraid of anything no matter how big.
