how aggressive are red jewels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OH YES THEY ARE.

Expect them to beat up a CA/SA cichlid twice their size. Especially when breeding. I have always ended up getting rid of them eventually.

I think that they would fit in if you planned for them. Lots of space, lots of distraction. I have one in with some swordtails and the swordtails are completely ignored. I have a tank with a breeding pair and they fend of anything, even my giant hand. From my experience with them, one year, they are mostly aggressive towards the competition. Excellent parents.

Can one avoid fry from surviving past that stage in their life by only feeding the adults, or will they find a way?

I'm considering some in a 190 tank with perhaps some other fish, And I don't want any of the fishes to get babies that grows up..

Any input on this would be appreciated.

If you don't want reproduction just get all one gender or if they do sell the fry to the LFS, red jewels are popular fish

Can you tell the sex at 2 - 3.5 inches?

Reason I ask is I can get them from my local supplier at that size, and I was wondering if it's possible to tell at that size.

In cm it is 6-9cm.

Also what is better, all males or all females?

With the sp. Turquoise I had the factor to sex was if it had spangles down its whole body or not, males did females didn't (or other way around not positive) as I was told on here. You may be able to use this with normal reds I'm not positive though. I've found males to be more aggressive and defensive of territory encroachment so I would bet all females would work better. Unless you like to see fish fight a lot lol
