A friend of ours has a few black nasties he is trying to spawn and said we could have some fry. How do the rate for agression when compared to other agressive cichlids? As examples Midas,RTM,Red Terror and so on are they about the same or way over the top. We have had other fish that were supposed to be insane but were not that bad. So any one who has owned them I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I've found them moderately aggressive with themselves, with others they stressed out quickly and bloated, black nasty is quite the exaggeration...

Not too aggressive imo, that nick name came from the females which turn black around males and are more aggressive than the males ime. X2 around others fish they stress and bloat, they do best in a species only tank with just a pair or 1 solo fish.

Tank size is a major influence on how aggressive they are, in my 150 gallon, the pair would kill any other fish even when they were fairly small (male ended up about 15", female 11").
And I agree with the others, unless haitiensus can rule the tank, they tend to get sick and die of stress.

This is good to know I never would have guessed about the bloat issue.
