How any Pumkinseeds in a 55g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMO. I would go with one pair. Adults can get to 10".

iv recently acquired a pumpkinseed(and doing allot of research) ..they CAN get up to 10..but that is rare and only from what i have read in wild fish..

from what i have read they get 6-8 on average in a home aquarium.. so i would go with two in a 55..they get pretty mean.

good, thanks for the replies :) that kind of goes with what I was thinking, I knew the grew up to 10 and were on average slightly smaller, the area that I was worried about was the aggression levels. I didn't want to over stock and have an all out war on my hands.

I have a 75 with 3 p-seeds and 3 bluegill. They are all around 5-6". I find this to be a good stocking, there is some minor aggression but it is pretty well spread out. And from my research I have found that while P-seeds technically can grow to 12", it is like saying humans can techincally grow to 7'. It is so exceedingly rare to not even bother worrying about.

I had 4 in a 75 gal for awhile. Ended up with a male and 3 females, from 4.5-6". All was well until they started spawning. The male would guard the eggs and drive all of the females to the other end of the tank. I've never seen a pumpkinseed here in Maine that is over 6.5-7". I would keep 2 in a 55 gal.

that's actually backwards. less stock means more aggression. the aggression comes from territory protection. the more fish the less able they are to stake out territory.
if you want to keep 2 in a 55 I'd put some visual obstruction in the center so they can feel isolated in their territory. the less they feel intruded on by the other fish, the less likely they are to fight.
sexual tensions can change things though, two males are much more likely to fight then two fems.
