Hello,

I am current WAY over-stocked and wanted to know how bad is nitrite reading of .50 and under? I feed my tank about 14 small cut-up shrimp every other day. Everyday after the feeding the nitrite is about .50 and under and ammonia will be detectable but not high. I will test the water the next day and nitrite will be under.25 probably around .15 or .10 and ammonia will not readable. I current have FX5, 305, AC110, UV connect to 305, and large powerhead for circulation all full with bio-media. I also change about 5-8 5 gallon bucket of water every 2-3 days religiously.

For me it seems pretty bad on the long run. If you are full of bio media, then you should probably try to feed them something else les messy. How old the tank ? FUlly cycled ?

You may have answered your own question.
No amount of detectable ammonia or Nitrite is acceptable in my tanks and will prompt an immediate water change(s).

You could be: overstocked , over feeding , under filtered or any combination of these factors.

How big is your tank and what exactly are you stocking ?

What size is your tank and what do you have in it. Your tank doesn't sound cycled. Nitrites should be zero and nitrates should be 20ppm or been 10ppm or lower.

Tank has been running over 2 year. The water parameters used to be perfect but I just recently picked up few new fish and don't think my filters can handle the stock.

Tank is 170

1 20" aro
7 dats 6-8"
6" flagtail
7" Florida gar
3 8" stingrays

Some say bio media like substrat pro gets clog over time no matter how you carefully clean it. I had ammonia issue with old bio media (2 years), changed half, and never had any other ammonia readings.

Way overstocked and filtration is obviously inadequate. Nitrites and ammonia should be 0 all the time.
