hi there, i was just wondering what is the required size for a decent schoal of piranah... im completly new, and was just wondering about keeping piranah :drool: i really want to look into keeping them as they look fascinating to keep... :headbang2 so what size of tank, and dimentions should i be looking at? i no its kind of a stupid question but everyone here seems to know soo much about them... i though this might be the best place to ask as i'l get the correct answers... instead of going down to petsathome and getting a bunch of gormless stares, or being told i can keep 6 in a 20 gall tank... :screwy:
thnks everyone in advance

I pretty much agree except I think that you can start a bit smaller with 3 in a 55g, 5 in a 75.

I have kept 4 reds in a 75 no problem I would go a bit bigger if you have the $$$ and space something 6 foot long maybe

The size I listed are for life and are by no means rules. IMO the best begginer setup for reds are as follows:

* 75 gallon tank

* Two emp 350 or 400s

* other essentials of course like heater gravel and what not

* 6-10 1" reds. I say this many because you may loose some to cannabilism, but if you get lucky and all survive at about 5" pick out your best three and sell the rest!

Dont go to pets at home, theyd sell you 6 red bellys and a 3 litre tank! At the minute I have got 4 baby RB's (1.5") in a jewel 125 but ive got a nice big tank waiting for when they get bigger! Youve probably done some reading up about em but dont get upset when they hide in the plants a lot, my bunch were very shy when they were younger, now there a bit bigger they like to explore and bully other fish through the glass and now they let me know when there hungry....I love em!!!!!!!

it depends on their personality. you might get pussy *****s like my first shoal of piranhas, or you get ones that get curious when u stick your finger on the tank. :D :D :D
i sold my last shoal for about $20 each, when they were 3-4''. my current babies are around 1'' mark and i love them. i have a powerhead in there, and i had them ever since they were tiny. at first , they hid under my driftwood all the time, but now they are always out swimming in the open and i can approach the tank w/o them freaking out now. :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 . at this size, i decided to experiment with a rosie red (minnow), so i put the smallest one i could find, and my Ps already started chasing it around nipping its tail. it was so dam entertaining! (i dont plan on using feeders as a staple for my Ps, i know better than that. im just going to drop in a feeder whenever some friends come over and wanna watch).

so, buying red bellies doesnt necessarily mean you'll like them. its a hit or miss thing. also, you need to have hiding spots so they settle in faster, my babies only took about 2 days to settle in.

3-4 RBPs in a 75 gal for life. They put on weight fast and in a year from nickly size you'll have some 7"rs or so.
