i have a 40 gallon fish tank 2.5 ft wide, 1.1 feet deep, and 1.6 ft tall. Can my flowerhorn grow to its full potential or do i need a bigger tank later on? thanks.

I plan to keep my flowerhorn in a 50 breeder, that's three feet long and eighteen inches deep. Flowerhorns don't really get that big, most at around the one foot mark but I still think my tank is not big enough for his full potential. 75g would be perfect.

I think a lot of people will tell you 75. A 40 breeder is a good grow out tank but once he hits 8" or so I would look at moving him. He will want more swimming room then a 40 and the 75 would give that to him. Good luck!

Well it all depends on what kind of flowerhorn we are talking about. I would say a 75 is ok for a normal bodied, 55 for shortbody, 40 for bonsai. But with any fish the bigger the tank the better.

Keep in mind that SB and Bonsai is the same. They are no different, and many people tend to think Bonsai is shorter than a SB. It's the body itself that qualifies into being certain strain. Such as ZZ with a long body, Kamfa with a more short and compact square body(and many tend to call this a short body, it isn't the correct term), and then we have the extreme of all...SB/Bonsai. The sticky is very inaccurate to my knowledge about FH...

As far as answering this thread, a 40 would do ok for now. Anything hits 8" I would want to upgrade that tank. Even a 75 split would do better if your looking to save some space.

Then the sticky should be fixed.
