I know that it says in alot of books and magazines that they get from 9 to 12 inches long but African's do tend to get bigger in captivity. Do any of you have any stories of them getting really BIG?, thanks....Scott.

Mine got to about 9.5in before I sold him to my freind. He was only about 2 years old too, and still growing. He was in a 90 as well so in a big tank he would have gotten bigger.

When I went to they had one that was at least 14in if not more but it is hard to judge in a huge tank.

Here he is at about 8in, I don't have any recent pics.

In an aquarium from my knowledge they can get up to 12inches.

12 inches is a nice size but I'm hoping for a little more, maybe 14 or 15 inches long, after all he's in a 180 gallon tank so it's a possibilty. He's only about 4 inches right now and he hasn't started to color up yet but I know that it won't be too long at that size.

Sorry for my post. When I went to the Shedd aquarium they had a 14in one, but they had it in like a 1000gl tank.

Yours should get 12in no problem if mine can get 9.5in in a 90gl. You should get ahold of an albino, they are really cool.

I've never seen the albino's around this area, only some bleached out O.B.'s and I wasn't very impressed with them.

I haven't seen a "monster" D. compressiceps yet. I have read that africans get larger in aquariums and that they don't stop growing just slow down. I have seen HUGE specimens of other species that were inches above the "normal' size. I've seen pictures of gold D. compressiceps (think they were from Chismulu Island) and of course I've seen albinos. Scott g wrote"I've never seen the albino's around this area, only some bleached out O.B.'s" I hope you didn't mean OB D. compressiceps! I've seen references to Aquabid so here is a fact: Anything sold as an OB, other than a few mbuna genus, is a hybrid. There are way too many "Dr. Hybridsteins" in the hobby now (and growing) who confusing/cheating with many "new" OB species. I haven't read enough in this forum to see how the Hybrids issue stands. It is a heated subject in many forums with the vast majority of experienced and educated members of the hobby being greatly against hybrids. Most local fish clubs and the ACA do not allow them in auctions. I've seen several D. compressiceps hybrids, but not an OB yet.

Yes I did mean O.B. Compressiceps and you could tell just by looking at them that they were part Comps and part something else plus the color wasn't that great.
