I know that many Silver Aro's are sold at my LFS. I wonder how many people don't anticipate them growing so fat and eventually either sell them, give them away, or free them in the lake. What size are they usually before the owner has to let go of them? How many years into it is this?

if you really love your aros, you would not throw them into the lake or sell them or simply get rid of them.. those people who do that only goes to show that they are ignorant of the aros potential to begin with and are irresponsible people.. but that is only one side of the coin though.. for those people with valid reasons, peace! lol

depends on the person I guess. But I'd estimate that most people who get aros have at least 55g tanks. They probably get the aro under 6", and then in about 8-10 months it will have outgrown the tank. In 1 year some aros will be pushing 24", so I'd say between 14-20 inches.

my friend had one in a 55 and got rid of his when it got about 20 inches
i got it out of the tank
man was that fun
:D

usually people get rid of there large arows for several reasons
-need to sell for make $$$$
-make room for other species
-they cant afford to put the arow in a bigger home
-dont have time for it

What I really hate is when people buy arows and dont give them a proper home when they get big.

This is why you need to think and do plenty of research before you buy your fish! I would never get rid of my Silver, if anything ill do whatever i can to keep him i.e big tank or biig pond just to keep him, its like getting rid of a family member, especially if youve brought them up since they were 3-4" juvies!

depends on the tank size, and how long it takes irresponsible people to realize they have truely outgrown them :(
As for how long, diet and water quality will determine a large part of thier growth.

I don't personally know too many people who have kept aros, but at my lfs, they have a 180 with 2 silver aros, both at about 2-2.5 ft that 2 different owners have dropped off because they couldn't house it any longer. I don't know how long they've been in there though and I don't know what size they were dropped off at (never bothered to ask), but yeah I would assume around 2 feet probably.
