I will be picking up a 180 gal tank from Vivid tomorrow at lunch :D and wanted to know how big of a sump would be appropriate to build a wet/dry?

Also, is there a simple way to figure out if the bottom of a tank is tempered or not? I would love to drill it, but obviously don't want to ruin it.

40g would be plently for a sump on a 180 :grinyes:

In my experience so far all tempered glass tanks I have seen are labled on the bottom piece "tempered glass - do not drill". You can also find out if you know what year the tank was built.

I know its not much but hoped that helps :D

yep 40 gallon is more than enough
thats whats on my 180

I have heard a sump should be 20% of the aquarium volume.
i do not run a sump system so i am unclear if this is an accurate rule of thumb, but im sure someone will verify.

i go with a bit of overkill on my 240gl. i have the dual corner overflows with individual 40gl sumps for each overflow. each sump has bioballs, heaters and appropriate media. i've got two pumps that pull from both sumps so if one pump dies the sump won't spill over the side.
