hello folks. I’m really curious as to max size on these. I’m hearing 18” but have also seen references to them getting to 24”. Anyone on here have any adults at the 18-24” range? If not, how big is your adults?

My largest is probably close to 20 inches and just keeps getting longer. My other 2 are in the 17 to 18 inch range and seem to be filling out and not putting on as much length. Personally, I think certain individuals could easily reach 24. My largest, i think has the potential to do so. It is a bigger fish in general and was the last to color up.

Thank you lunsforj lunsforj I appreciate the follow up. I was trying to determine which species I should keep in my smaller tank and it was a toss up between the intermedia and the kelberi. Looks like the Kelberi will go in the smaller tank.

Yeah I'm not convinced intermedia are a "smaller" species. I got mine for that reason and then watched them quickly attain their "max size" within a year.

I figured 24” would be about right. Thanks for the confirmation.
Kelberi aren't really a small species either. Hell! No bass are small. I noticed my bass get a huge growth spurt when they went from a 225g to a 450g and they were already good size.
How do you think five of them would do with some Crenicichla Multispinosa and Six geo sveni in a 280? 80”x34”x24”?

It will probably work for a while. Just keep in mind they can and will eat sizable prey. My largest ate 2 large Satanoperca lilithi that weren't any smaller than my geos. My geos are taller bodied, which is what I believe has kept them out of the stomachs of my bass.

Big. 7-8 inch or bigger. Imagine the biggest jurapari you've ever seen but slightly more streamlined. Both incidents happened during water changes after living peacefully for a long time. Perhaps the stress during the change triggered the flight mode in them and then the bass picked up on that. Hard to say though.

Something else I might mention here is originally I wanted to do a community around my bass with them being the main focal point. I tried many fish with limited success like a large brycon (constantly harassed by bass), large tiger striped silver dollars(1 eaten, the rest trashed in a group of 7), lenticulata pikes (constantly warring with bass over the entire tank). Also, once I got rid of the pikes, I no longer needed the cover for them. I pulled a large stump out of my tank about 2 weeks after the pikes were removed and my bass actually settled down quite a bit. I know this is counterintuitive to keeping most cichlids, but mine went from hesitantly watching me when viewing them to actively seeking me out afterwards. Their attitude changed almost overnight. I wondered if intermedia might be more of an open water predator?

This made me reconsider how I keep these fish. I now understand why people keep them with limited to no decor. To me a bare tank is too boring, so I opted for a simpler layout with no sharp edges.

That's the other thing, when my fish were in grow mode, they would jet all over the tank to hit food or run from me or one another. They sustained injuries from sharper points of wood pieces (so far all healed but not fun to watch) I had in with them. For this reason if I were to grow out another batch I would keep the tank simple and make an extra effort to avoid possible injury prone decor.

Just my 2 cents
