I recently got back into the hobby after about 10 years off and came across a deal for a tank set up that came with some fish to include a 7.5" CL and a 5" redtail loach. I have kept many of both years ago but am rusty on my knowledge. I'm wanting to find a few more of each species so these have some tank mates but am having a hard time finding any larger ones about that size, especially CL's and for a reasonable price. My question is how much smaller can I go on CL's to buy that would make mine feel happy he has some of his own around now and is part of a school and same goes for the redtail loach? Also, if somebody comes across a good deal on any can you PLEASE PM and let me know where to find them?

Also, I've never owned a CL this big. Any idea about what age it might be at 7.5"? I would think between 5ish given he might have grown a little slow due to his previous own who had for several years kept him alone with oscars and a jag and all their diet was the same, floating pond pellets. smh

Clowns love company. I have kept +12" with 3" with only one problem. The large ones got fat. They looked like submarines with Ballest tanks. The solution was to use rocks and make areas the hogs couldn't get into. Be wary of the redtail they can be aggressive towards smaller loaches.

A fun way to get back in the hobby!

I once had a tank full of about a dozen redtails and about the same number in CL's and never had a problem. However I think that's due to the fact they were all juvis, none over about a year old. After posting I have read where others have had issues with keeping them together so now I'm considering not doing it as well and maybe getting rid of him. You by chance know where to pick up a few adult CL's for a good price?

Large clowns tend to demand a high price due to such a slow growth rate. The best deal I've found, was a 7" clown randomly turned in to my lfs. They sold it to me for $45. 5 years old sounds about right for 7.5". I've kept 2" clowns with my 8" and 9" clowns without issue.

I actually just came across four 6" CL's yesterday and an LFS and they're wanting $80 each. The guy said they'd take my three 7" raphael strips catfish and 5" redtailed loach in on trade as well and knocked the price down for me being a disabled veteran and if I bought all four! He has to talk to manager today and see exactly how much but I'm hoping alot!

$80 each does seem a bit steep. But any way you slice it, four 6" clowns will cost you a bit if the seller knows what they have. If you bought all four, you'd have a real good start on a nice little group! What size tank do you have for them?

Right now I have the one in a new 55. He along with a 14" ornate bichir, 8" Jaguar I just got rid of, 5" redtail botia, and the 3 catfish all came with a 125 setup that I'm doing a complete reseal on. I got all the fish and the setup for $200. I got this 55 yesterday for only $80 and it's in perfect condition. Going to make it solely dedicated to CL's

Good deal on both set ups. Just be aware ideally you'll want to upgrade the clown tank down the road. I have six that are 4", 5", 7", 2x8", 9" and I am upgrading my 4'x2'x2' to a 5'x2'x2' with a sump next month. They will use all the space you can give them. I'd have gone with a 6'x2'x2', but I don't have the space.

Well I'll eventually upgrade them to the 125 when I move and 8 months a get a 300. I've had MANY CL's and other fish over the years. At one time I had 2000 gallons worth of tanks so I'm very knowledgeable in their care. It's just be a decade since I've had any! lol
