I would look at the new world cichlids, having plants your ph and water hardness would be too low for most or all africans. You could have a really good size fish, the only issue you will have is many cichlids like to tear up plants. Discus are a option. Discus are a harder fish to maintain compared to others. not a begginer fish. I had mine in a tank with real plants , they rarely messed with them. THey are beautiful too, come in every color and markings under the rainbow. They like similar water conditions as rams etc.. Super clean water, extra filration, very low ph, soft acidic water, lots of plants, driftwood, like a quiet peaceful tank. They also like tannins from driftwood or the kind you can buy in a bottle like black water extract etc.. You can keep them with angels, they are pretty together. I never tried but i think you could even keep them with the rams i mentioned earlier. I dont think the discus would try to eat them, but i cant be sure. Uaru might do well in that tank, cant remember if they messed with plants or not. I dont think they did. But check first. Just some ideas. You did not mention the kinds of fish you were looking at.
