setting up 2 125's one for my current reef the other for my snowflake eel and a grow out for my shark that just hatched

wondering how big of a sump i need to set up

will also have a 20gal fuge for the reef and a 20 gal diy sump with a diy 3ft tall skimmer i just made

will run uv on the shark eel tank as it will only have a small amount of lr in the middle for the eel

what size should i make the sump if i want both tanks on it or should i keep them both seprate because of the bio load of the eel and shark

I personally would keep them seperate due to the bio load. For size, the bigger the better, more water = more stabillity!

+1 ^ Especially for the shark. It needs to have extremely clean water to thrive.
They are also poop machines when they start feeding, so having more volume will help stabilize the water for the shark.
I really hope you already have an understanding on their needs.

if you make a sump big enough for a 250 gallon tank what difference does it make whether it's on 2 125s or a 250 (granted the 250 would be MUCH better for the shark)

sumps are usually 1/3 or more of the total volume (to accomidate for if/when the power is turned off)

you need the running volume and how much will drain off the tank when the powers off
take the length+width of the tank plus the distance from running surface level to the bottom of the overflow inlets.. usually somewhere around 2 inches

for 2 72"x18" 125's that be about 22 gallons...

plus the about 60 gallons for the running volume so around 80 gallons total

but i'll admit.. 2x 40 gallon totes under the tank would be easier (and probably more visually appealing) than one big sump, which probably wouldn't fit under the tanks

if you're going to run a UV for either tank, but have the 1 sump, you'll want a UV for 250 gallons. mixing the water but only allowing 1/2 to be UV filtered (or however much the filter is rated for) is rather pointless

seperate the sumps. All the feeding done on the reef tank for the corals, and all the waste produced, its just easier to have the shark growout on one sump, and your reef on a sump dedicated to that tank. This means you will need another skimmer, but if i were you, i would be focusing on the shark, as they are hard to raise as a hatchling. Good luck, and start posting some questions on the shark/ray thread, so you know what you need to do for the shark.

the shark is eating and hangs out with the eel

will get more pics after i move and put them in the 125 i got last night they are getting their own tank more room
