could a 50 gallon tank be suitable for piranhas? are there kinds that get different sizes? are they legal in California to buy? cause I have never seen them at any of the LFS.

Bad state for the piranha fan. All species of the genera Serrasalmus, Serrasalmo, Pygocentrus, Taddyella, Rooseveltiella, and Pygopristis are illegal in Cali. The only P that can be legally kept in CA is Catoprion mento. And, fortunately, C. mento is a smaller species and several can be maintained in a 50 gal.
