our pet store has some blue catfish for sale. i had one about a year ago but my other fish killed it when i was about 5 inches. but i am wondering how big of tank would i need for one it would probably be by itself in the tank. i am looking at getting either on these of a gulper catfish. what are the pros and cons about them? witch one would i be better off on getting?

Blue catfish get A LOT bigger than the gulper catfish. I would think a gulper catfish would be better than a blue catfish. I've owned a few gulper catfish before and they are cool. They don't need a large tank also as they are not a big swimming fish but even though they are not too active the awsome feeding time show makes up for that.

yea i know they get big i have caught a couple in the 15 20 pound range but i didnt know if they sale the same breed of blue cats that we catch or if it was a smaller breed. i bought one when i got my jd and my jd killed it. i hate that stupid jd wish my wife would let me get rid of it.

Well sometimes they mislabel common channel cats as blue cats and channels dont get quiet that big but can easily hit the 3 ft 50 lb range. Either way they are not meant for aquariums, recommended for ponds only. I got rid of my jd a year ago and now I miss him. :(

As for the gulper I would try your lfs. They might be able to order you one if they dont have one already.

aight thanks i will ask them. bad thing is i have to go outta town to do that what is a good price range on the gulpers?

I bet it is a channel. I have never seen blue cats in the trade. Blue cats don't breed well in captivity (or at all in captivity) so they are not readily available for sale in pet stores.

Blue cats are migatory, mid water fish (much more so that channels) and I would think you would need a swimming pool to keep one to adult hood. I have caught them up to 50 lbs and I have friends that have caught them 80-100 lbs and over 50".
