I have seen some discrepancy. I thought maybe a foot and a half at the absolute most, but can they get bigger? I read someone state that they (Petenia Spledida) were one of the biggest cichlids along with peacock bass, dovii, and umbriferus. They don't get 2 feet do they?

I really hope not, I wanted a smaller version of the peacock bass with the big mouth and I thought I had found it, but I just came across this information today after I traded my flowerhorn in for a nicely colored 6 inch snook maybe 2 weeks ago. I am really attached and I hope he can at least be in a 125 for a few years until i move out and get a bigger tank.

I've always heard 16-20". And I've seen some close to this, but never bigger. Not saying they're not out there, I just haven't heard of them.

ya i would say that they usually max out around 16-20 inches

Hmm so a 125 wouldn't be too bad of a home for a while, at least until I move out and get a bigger tank? I mean they don't seem to swim around too much, they like the overhead plants, and really only come out when its feeding time.

I didn't believe the 24 inches though either since my LFS has had a breeding pair in a 75 for a couple years and the male is no more than 14-15 inches and the female is considerably less (granted a 75 is small, but they continue to breed in it so they don't fight it).

I've not seen or heard of them getting much over 14". Anyone have any photos of the 16-20" "common" ones?

Hmm that would definitely explain why the breeder pair at the fish store is smaller than that (~14") after over 2 years.

Well at Petsmart the always helpful Red Bay Snook tag states that they don't get anywhere over 8 inches. So maybe if we take the average of the 2? (20+8)/2 = 14".

There, my logic is flawless.

Ha! That logic is priceless! Yeah, I laughed at that same tag when I saw it. I've searched the internet for pics and can't seem to find anything bigger than the 11" I saw on a thread here. There's one at a petstore here that's probably 10", but that's the biggest ones I've seen. At the rate mine is growing, I could see a possible 16" in his future. He's growing at about 1" per month. About 7" now. Eats like a PIG. Being male helps also, as I've only "heard" of females making it to about a foot.
