I'm on my second silver arowana. My first had to be given to a university aquarium because she grew too large (29" from a tiny 3") for my 250 gallon. I had her for 1.5 years and it was sad parting, but she needed more space as she was huge! It took 3 of us to transport her.

She started to develop drop eye at about 1 yr old.

I've just bought another baby silver. I got him at about 4" 1 month ago and he's already 7"+. No drop eye yet and I want to avoid it. I feed him varied food and often, keep the water at 80 degrees fahrenheit, and change the water 50% twice a week.

Anything else I should be doing?

one question, did you get another bigger tank? because your new aro is gonna get just as big as your old one and its usually pretty hard to rehome large fish.

same question here.. do you have a bigger tank or are you just going to keep this one regardles.. 250 would seem to be large enough, unless you want your silver to not have to bend at all to turn around. But i would expect this silver to reach the same size.

and Drop Eye is one of those problems that can be debated till the cows come home.

I believe one sure fire way is having them in a pond where all sides are covered so they have to avert their eyes upward.

I am having a 500 gallon custom built...I know he'll get huge...my fish guys laugh at how big I grow my fish. My 250 is a custom as well and wide as well as long so there's lots of turning room...for now.

Good idea on the pond.

for silver its normal i tink for dropd eyes...seen lots of silver wif the same prob! maybe feed wif floating food 2 avoid

There's not much you can do, besides creating a system where the aro needs to look up and cut on fatty foods. But even then, there is no guarantee, imo.

And wellcome, first of all!

when you buy a silver aro then their is a good chance it will get drop eye

if you dont like drop eye spend the extra cash and get a black aro

Thanks for all the feedback and thank you Miguel for the nice welcome.

Just notice that his left eye seems to be dropping a bit, but his right eye is fine...will try the floating pellet trick. Is the left eye fixable?

Have been feeding him guppies and frozen krill shrimp that I float on top.

I really like the silvers temperment.
