I really want a small boa or python, but my mom doesnt want anything that has to eat mice or rats or anything furry. I have been reading about redtailed boas, amazon tree boas, carpet pythons and a few others. I can buy everything it needs. How can I convince her to let me get one? Please Help!

I'm assuming you've never kept snakes before, and you've done your research.

The snakes you mentioned aren't very good snakes for beginners. I recommend you start with a ball python, corn snake, milk snake, or king snake.

Alright. Try to have a mature conversation with your mother. Tell her that these snakes are NOT dangerous, and that hundreds of thousands of people keep them as pets. Everyday driving is more dangerous than handling these snakes.

You need to convince her that snake aren't scary demonic reptiles. If you know someone/somewhere that will let you hold some snakes, go show her. Hopefully she will realize that snakes make terrific pets, and are very calm.

Also tell her how snakes make no noise whatsoever, no mess outside of the cage, and are in fact very clean animals.

I'm not sure what to say about the whole furry deal. I know that it's very easy to buy corns/kings/milks that eat frozen mice, and there will be no need for live mice for that. It's not like she has to witness the snake eating all the time. Good luck.

I have kept quite a few garter snakes because they eat fish and worms. She even held them on a few rare occasions. I have multiple other reptiles. My last garter died about a year ago, and I have been looking for something a lot bigger. I thought about water snakes, but I want something I can handle every once in a while. The larger rat snakes are ok, and I really like pythons and boas. I told her that she would never even see it eating or know it was there, but she doesnt like the thought of it happening in her house.

Ah, I see the problem now.

Unless she is vegetarian, you can make a good case. Snakes eats rodents naturally, and they need to eat too in order to survive. Explain to her how the rodent will be going through a minimal amount of suffering and there will be little to no blood. Is there any reason why she likes mammals so much?

She has always kept little furry animals and has rescued countless mice, rabbits and birds from our cats. I'll try to explain it to her tomorrow. Last time I did this we went to the reptile show for a water snake, I came back with a veiled chameleon:irked:. I almost got a baby Amazon tree boa for $15, instead I got a chameleon for $30:irked:. I need to convince her to let me get one before next weekend.

Ah, damn. That's going to be hard. I guess you can just tell her the mice will not be suffering much. Good luck anyway.

tel her that you can order rats and mice online for cheaper than in the pet store and they will arrive frozen so that you will not have to watch them die since they will have already have been humanely euthanized.

Shes about to give in:headbang2, I just need to find a snake that she might like. Can an amazon tree boa live in a cage 12"wx12"lx18"t for its entire life. And how often do they need to eat?
