I have a jade goby that is mostly black. I assume this is due to black sand and black background. Is there any way to get him to show his colors without changing the substrate/background?

IME, sleeper gobies are like cichlids - you get the best and brightest colors on light backgrounds. My mogurnda turned dark on a brown substrate, but look beautiful on white dolomite.
