my 3-4 month old gar has been eating nothing but fish his whole life until recently when i gave him ghost shrimp which he liked but had a hard time finding, but id really like to get him used to eating floating food-how can i do this? hes a silver gar at like 4-5 inches long.

starve him for a week and he'll accept the pellets i didnt have problems with mine they accepted it when i ran out of guppies and ghost shrimp

lol yea hes at the 4-5 day mark for not eating anything, i threw a junebug in the tank & after 10 mins he went after it but it grabbed ahold of his nose with a leg & the wierd feeling of its legs made him shudder (thats right, SHUDDER) backwards clear across the tank. ever since he wont touch the june bug & i honest to god never thought id see a fish shudder like a person would (not beat himself around the tank like he does any other time, he actually shuddered LOL).

HAHA, that's tight... I have a video of my gator gar eating one of those big green Japanese beetle things.

Also a "Silver Gar" is not a true gar, it's a charchin or something like that.
Look into getting a Florida Gar or a Spotted Gar ;)

i believe what you have is a characin...ctenolucius hujeta.
not a true gar.
they can be hard to get off live...but ive done it.
it took more than a weeks starving for some of them.
some didnt take it at all.

lol thanks for your help guys. i got this fish months ago & since hes outlived 2x 3" arowana tank mates who both died due to SEVERE water quality issues (i didnt know about water chemistry except for removing innitial chemicals from the way), hes also outlived another gar just like him but 3/4 his size because the dip **** jumped out of the tank in the middle of the night to spite me as far as i can tell. against advise that ive read on several sites, ive had my tank uncovered since day one-& all of my fish were fine & never tried to jump out, but then i added a pleco to the tank & decided to cover it in case it scared one of the gars & made them jump, well after MONTHS of having the tank uncovered, apparently seeing me cover the tank 90% with something was enough motivation to want to die by dehydration. through all of this, my original gar (known as Brock Samson) has thrived EASILY. when the second aro died the lady at the petshop checked my water & it was at the highest levels for EVERYTHING that the test could read, yet this didnt bother Brock one bit. im so happy with this fish i cant even tell you guys, i would definitely recommend spending the $15 to get one, they are great & mines been growing .5 inch every week or 2.

also im not going to try and get him on pellets, hes a killing machine so i figure feeding him pellets is even more against his nature than sitting in a tank, so at the very least im looking to get him eating crickets/insects off the top of the water. i have also gotten Brock to eat several earthworms just by throwing them in the tank (he ate them while they were laying on the bottom!).

thats some growth for a hujeta...can you get a pic?

not atm but i can get some when my gf gets back with her cell. his growth has slowed much now over the last month & is about half as much, but is more than likely due to the fact that hes in a crap ass 10 gallon tank for another week or 2 because his 30g started cracking after being in use for a few months.

Glad to hear you are sticking with live foods. I have 3 hujeta's and they grow really fast there first 8 months or so and then allmost stop at around 9-10''. Mine went from 2'' to 7'' in the first year and then maybe only 1.5''s the second year. They also loose most of there aggressive eating habits when they hit that 8-10'' mark. They are a schooling fish and seem to enjoy the competition of more hujeta's. So if you like 1 get your self a few more.
