How can I improve filtration

I have a 200 gallon tank with a wet.dry filter I have pre filter sponges and a polishing spong but I want the best for my puffer, so I was thinking a coil denitraitor but I have to shut off my pump when I do wc would that kill the bacteria? And I was thinking a purgien sp? Reator but don't know if it'll do any good? I do wc 35% every 4 days and that wont change but I want to make the best for my fw puffer

That makes sense because the bacteria on the bio balls don't die off every time anyone ever make one?
