Im currently using a Hydor Prime 960l/h and a jebao 1000l/h cannister filter and a ohf with an evo 450l/h pump. All the filters are filled with filter wool and ceramic rings. I know my tank is overstocked as I have 13 fish in there and I also know that the flowerhorn is biting my goldfish so I'm separating them soon. All comments are welcome. Thanks. :nilly:

from my knowledge gold fish are dirty fish anyways, and you have 13 of them in a small tank. get rid of some of the gold fish and do a water change. should help out some

A 40g tank isn't big enough for 1 fully grown goldfish or 1 fully grown flowerhorn. The best thing you could do is get a larger tank, and then keep only 1-2 fish in it (unless you get a huge tank).

Assuming that you aren't going to get a bigger tank, the best thing you can do is get rid of as many fish as possible.

yea get rid of the goldfish and flowerhorn then stick something in there that works..

Listen to this and the earlier post that said you need to redo that entire tank.

a 40 gallon isnt enough for ONE goldfish? You serious mate? lol

You can improve it by selling it.... seriously!! And don't worry about the goldfish the FH will get rid of them for you... Look around on craigslist you can get some serious deals!! at least get a 150 for that FH if your looking to get away with another tank mate... like a pleco or a species of pike that gets at least 16"

In the long term, you should start planning to upgrade. Although people do it, I don't recommend putting fish in tropical tanks because they aren't tropical fish, they prefer colder water, so if you do upgrade, they'd have to go into separate tanks.

In the short term, I'd take the ceramic-ring substrate out. It seems to me like it would be harder to clean them, due to all the places for particulates to hide. IMO, your life is easier (meaning, your nitrates don't skyrocket), when you keep your media in a place where the only thing that reaches them is water.

Definitely not for a slender-bodied goldfish. It might be enough for a round-bodied, if you kept up with the water changes, maybe 50% every other day.

Is the lucky bamboo for nitrates? How's it keeping up? I've heard they're not very good because they're slow growers. If you feel you need something that'll suck up nitrates faster, you can use Pothos. Just dangle the roots in water.
