i was wondering if anyone does anything different to buffer besides chemicals.i have a large driftwood piece that i will add to a 50 gal. tank for CA cichlids.it has soaked for 1 month, with water changes.i planned on buffering with a bag of crushed coral in my filter.how much is needed? any other ideas?

Whats your ph now? it may not drop it enough to need to put anything in there.
If it does, I would buy a pound and only put half in the tank (Rinsed really well, or youll have a white cloud tank until the filter gets it) and then go from there checking every couple days.

Limestone will do the trick. Not sure you could put enough CC in your filter to make a difference. What are you using for a substrate? What is the pH from the tap?

i have PFS substrate,PH from the tap is 7.2 i have not checked it from the tap,or in the tank for awhile(old test kit) i was worried that the new big piece of wood could possibly lower it below 7.i will get a kit, thanks for advice

You might want to add some CC to your sand, I personally like the look. Try adding to a small section of the tank and see what you think? The wood will drop the pH of the tank.

Check your KH. If you have a decent buffering capacity, driftwood won't even make your PH flinch.
