I have a tetratest ph kit, and a small bottle for raising ph, which says to add 4 drops per gallon to raise the pH. I have added many many drops, but according to my test kit, my pH is still about 5.5, which is too acidic because I want to get guppies.

I'm thinking of getting a new test kit and pH up, (I've had these ones for a long time now), so any recommendations? Thanks.

Get a new kit first. Test your tap water also. Get rid of the chemicals. You can raise the Ph with crused coral or crushed oyster shell. It is easier to manage.

You may want to test your kh as well ,don't use chemicals you don't want fluctuation try oyster or coral or lime stone.

Definately post the pH of your tap water here.

Guppies do fine in a wide range of pH levels. Limestone rocks, crushed coral and bi carb soda all raise the pH. Although bicarb soda will only have a temporary effect.

The pH of my tap water is atleast 8; it is very high, and is a dark purple when I test it.

Do they sell crushed coral at the lfs? Will the coral dissolve?

Also, my cousin brought me a few shells from florida. Could I use one, and how should I rinse it? Thanks.

Any buffering agent, such as limestone (texas holey rock), crushed coral, and aragonite will dissolve in acidic conditions. That's how acidic water becomes buffered. All 3 are normally carried in most lfs. Aragonite should be replaced/recharged about every 2 years for stable buffering. Block limestone will last almost indefinitely.

Your tap water is already very alkaline. So, something is making your water acidic. Slightly 'green' driftwood, irregular water changes/gravel washes, and many types of lava rock will lower your tank's pH. Remove these items if you have any and schedule regular weekly water changes/gravel washes.

There are actually types of lava rock that will lower your pH?

I'm glad I saw that, I had no idea.

If your tap is 8, then why not just do more, larger WC?
