i guess you really cant, but what i noticed with my swordtails is that you can see that thfrom where their vent is up into thei bodya dark barely visible "pathway" connects the gestation spot with the vent. idk it might be it

Guppy bellies will square off when nearing their time. instead of being fat and rounded, you will notice it is getting more square. Some also tend to start going nearer plants and chasing others away.

don't know about right before but all mine in both tanks look like they should drop again within a week .
I don't expect the fry in my senegals tank to survive do to the fact in addition to the poly there is an african brown knife, a rapheal cat and a pair of gouramis. come to think of it the fact that the 3 very prego females and the little male have been in the tank for over a month now is kinda odd. they were QT'd feeders.

hopefully the fry in my livebearer tank will survive last time only 2 both female fry survived they look prego to actually.
current guppys one male 4 +2 females

It isn't unusual to to lose a lot of livebearer fry. Out of 40, I had 4 that survived and I did everything I could. I have been told it is due to inbreeding and stress. I had a balloon molly that delivered 8 and 2 of those survived. The others were born dead.

guppies get a huge gravid spot. you should be able to look into it and see tons of eyes. and a couple of days before they pop, their chests get a really square shape (this also happens to my red wag swords). they do tend to hide more as well, but not always. the shape of their chest and how dark the gravid spot is were always my best indicators

ya guppies get really dark gravid spots
