Howdy,

The whole-house filter that is hooked up to my drip system was disgusting after a year ...

That's a good sign that your filter is working though :)

Growing up in the country most of my life, I can imagine all the garbage I've drank. Now I gulp down chemicals. I actually miss the taste of well water :)
 
I consider myself very lucky. We have good well water (pH 7.6, dKH 6, nitrate<1) with almost no sediment and low iron. I change out about 100 gallons per day, so not having to do anything to the water is a huge plus. We had to drill through 550' of basalt to get it, but it is worth it.
