right .. im confused now guys and ladies..how come peacock bass are cichlids but large mouth bass are related to sunfish ? please can you lot help me untwist my head !!!!

Because the largemouth bass such as the sunfish are US native fish. And all Cichlas comes from South America, don´t get fooled by the "bass" in their name. :)

Just because species look similar doesn't mean they are closely related. Both cichlids and centrarchids are "perch-like fish" (perciformes), they are just different families. Centrarchids are basically a North American version of cichlids. Their very similar body shape is likely due to convergent evolution (filling a similar niche and adapting in similar ways to fit that niche)

that makes sense now . why is the peacock bass called bass then ?

Cause it looks like a bass? Fish common names mean basically nothing. There are about a dozen freshwater "sharks" cause the common name makes uninformed people more likely to buy them...

arr i get ya . like silver sharks and red tailed sharks. because of the name they get more interest.

its all based on taxonomy man. LMB and cichla are in the same order (Perciformes), but diverge into different families. LMB are Centrarchidae and Cichla are Cichlidae.
