My friend asked me...

I have a fish in terrible water condition for a very long time, and then when I put the fish back in clean water (with other fish / cycled tank, normal temperature and etc), the fish died in matter of hours, why's that?

just like when u introduce a new fish you have to get him used to the next set of water he got used to where he was though not healthy for him he might have gotten shock from the sudden swing in water type

its a big shock to go in clean water after adapting to poor conditions

It's like a really fat guy who's never got any exercise suddenly getting up and going for a marathon jog...he'd likely die. Jogging is healthy, but you've gotta be prepared if you've never done it before...

your friend had him in water with high nitrates and low pH (from bad water conditions)

the pH shock is probably what killed the fish so quickly.

Because he adapted to the bad water quality. That's why he died when he went to better water. If acclimated really slowly he might have made it.

ITs called toxic shock syndrome
