I am looking to start a pet store not just online but an actual lfs. looking to know what you did to start! not ideas just what you did and how well it worked...

Years and years of owning aquariums and working in pet shops are a good learning experiance that will help you get down the in's and out's.

if your not in a large city dont bother
the rent is well worth the location, small stores go under constantly in the rural towns (not enough hobbyists) and b rdy to cary the bread and butter fish

But yeah, nick is right. Don't bother opening up in a small city. In washington state, you might want to start it up in seattle, or spokane, a rather larger city. Look into competition in the surrounding area. FInancial advisor. create a business plan. basic stuff

Hey cool! i want to start an Aqua store in a few years once i have worked at a LFS for a few yeas and done my course in Aquaculture.
but im not 100% sure if i should since the city i live in has inly got around 1,500,000 people lol

no offense to waldo and miles cuz they have great very healthy fish. but I want a pet store and I was also looking for people who have done it I have plenty of ideas and talked to many pet store owners while working at one for the past couple of years so I wanted someones personal experience. I know what it is like to own/work at one since I am the manager/head of fish...
I know I live in Iowa, but the LFS I go to is a little over an hour away and Petco and Petsmart are 10 minutes away. Quality fish and supplies with knowledge and good advertising will go a long ways.
Partly because I live in a small town I want to run a fish farm as opposed to a fish store. I want to farm and raise fish (aquaculture) for the pet trade. Probably nothing exotic at first but just the bread and butter fish. I would like to supply to the other stores. Since the fish would probably be shipped location should not I hope matter to much. I used to want to own a store but I would hate deling with the customers, I would never make any money because I would tell them what they can and cannot do or get.
Hey! Im going to study aquaculture at TAFE in 2007 (tafe is like college?)
Then i'm hopefully going to get into fish farming business, start my own farm im only 17 now but its a good idea i think. And i probably wont do aquaruim fish more like seafood type of thing. Its a great industry to get in because it is one of the worlds fastest growing industries! im stoked!
