How do fluidized bed filters work? i know the suspend particles in a water column but how do you keep the particles from exiting the container and going into your tank? what different kinda of particles will work and what are the benefits to each? what size is appropriate for a 125gal.... and then a 1000gal.

Hi there, if this is what you mean then i am using klagen K1 media, the type used by most Koi keepers/breeders nowadays.
It is best if kept on the move but can be used static as mne is at the minute until i sort out a decent power head and spray bar to circulate it in its chamber.
The chamber it is used in needs to be atleast 50% K1, you cant over fill it aslong as it can be kept moving around.
I have fitted sponge either side to keep it in its chamber.
I have these pics i just got for you as it is now.

The K1 is the middle horizontal chamber where it is floating between the sponges.
I have also put a sheet of perspex over it to keep it in as it can get everywhere, not needed though if the sponges are high enough.

Hope this helps out a little.

The one I have (lifeguard) pumps water through the bottom of a chamber and out the top. The sand is heavy enough to not be pumped out and stay suspended and constantly churning in the chamber. The lowest size lifeguard is sized to 300 gallons and it's about a foot long.

Who did you purchase your FBF from? I was looking at filters from Dr.'s Foster & Smith a couple of days ago, and found their's which also is for a 300 gal. Quite unique type of filters. They look similar to Justin's which he shows on his 10 gal. on his "Epic DIY Build" thread. The OP may want to check them out to get some type of an idea as to what they look like and how thy operate. As for his technical questions though, I would direct those questions to the Senior Staff Members of Dr.'s Foster and Smith.
