I currently have about 25 - 30 carpintis fry of which I will be keeping one for my self. I have recently bought a gold severum of about the same size as they fry which is about 3-4cm. Will a Severum be able to hold its ground or is it going to get battered in the long run do you think? (the only other tank mates are a Gold spot pleco and a couple of bristlenoses)
Thanks Cam

Battered in the long run against an aggressive cichlid. If you don't want it to get picked on, you should add a few more gold severums so that if the carpintis is aggressive, he has to chose among the 4 gold severums. Or don't put the carpintis in with the severum and find less aggressive cichlids to go with the severum like chocolate cichlids or blue acaras.

Mmm the father of the fry (which I ended up selling) ended up earning himself his own tank for a while. Is there a tank size that a full grown carpintis can live with other cichlids or do they just always end up claiming the whole thing for them selves?

Do you think that a Featherfin catfish would be able to put up with the carpintis or maybe just stay out of its way?

That depends on several other factors as well and each individual fish. For example a have a 55-60 gallon tank full of just male fish including two green texas, No one fish so far pushes another one to far because they are also worried about the other males. If it was just 2 or 3 fish in the tank one might just run over the rest dominating. Others have success with multiples when they add dither fish for distraction and plenty of visual barriers and hiding places. Also because all of the texas group are whores no other female cichlids in view otherwise they will pair up then try and kill all fish seen as competition. I even had a true texas male just over ten inches try and claim a mate from a tank next to it and run all the other fish to the other end of the 75 he was in.

I have featherfins in with most of my cichlid tanks including my texas and texas hybrid tanks. I have never seen any of the cichlids pay any attention to them, prob because they are rather bland colored and not obtrusive of the cichlids space as long as there are plenty of hiding spaces.

I used to have a young male gold that would terrorize everything. it depends on the fish.

I also grew out a flowerhorn with a rotkeil severum and there were no issues

I may have to swap my severum out with my featherfin then. I use aqadvisor as a bit of a guide but it says a severum will grow to 12 inches and out grow my 48"x14"x20 which also has a blue acara and orange head tapajos in it. Do you think this is the case or do you think the severum would be fine in there?

For the short term yes but i would not want to keep any fish 10 inches even let alone 12 in a tank only 12 to 14 inches deep. I did in the past even with others harping on me about it but once i moved these fish into deeper tanks and seen first hand how the fish themselves acted with it never again. Watch some of the members tank videos on here then watch videos of other members with these huge super deep tanks or pools and same kinds of fish and pay attention to how the fish move and act.

I agree. The only reason I asked about the severum was that I have read on some sites that they only get to 4-6inches and there has been a green severum at a local pet store that is about 5 inches or so and seems like it hasn't grown for the the past 6 months that it has been there. What sizes do you find they generally grow to? also the tank I was going to be keeping the carpintis and gold spot pleco in is a 48"x18"x18" do you think that is big enough?
