how do i breed my bichir?

There was a thread about this some time back from what I can remember the woman used a lot of natural decor. She was breeding ornate bichirs she used a lot of dritwood and plantsand I think they were real plants and may have had a few more females in the mix. I can't remember the water temp or if there was a lot of water current but I believe the bichirs live in the congo river leaving me to lean toward some current. I think you can find this info in the ancient fish column under the bichir sub title good luck and I hope you can raise some.

large tank. footprint of 8x36 minimum height isnt as important. 24 should be ample. lots of current. a wave maker as well as a few strong powerheads with multiple patterns. basicly recreating a natural river flow. in the course should be large rocks for them to take refuge and spawn in. they wont spawn in direct current. they will choose a spot under cover. high oxgen levels are a must but with all the powerheads and a TIMED wave maker should be enough. id say over filtration is a must. 12-15 times per hour would be a good starting point depending on how well your filtration is set up. just some ideas. most of my tanks are set up in the same manner. example, my 100 gallon tank has 2 ac110s and a fluval 403. aprox 1350 gph. closer to 1100 real gph. i do 25% wc every week on that tank and its crystalllll. i wish i had a tank big enough to breed bichirs. my 240 or 225 wouldnt come close imo. good luck and keep us posted!

I was looking for info foryou and found that a well planted tank with plants that are bushy and some with fine leaves. Then you should lower the water temp a bit through water changes and do a couple of changes at least a week. It also sounds like the addition of live food may help and keep them well fed. When they do spawn the adults should be removed shortly after as they may eat the eggs. Hope this will help a little as I am planning on some day trying this myself.
