I just acquired a 29 gal tank that was used for sw, what is the best way to clean this? I am going to set it up for cichlids. I know not to use chemicals do I just use hot water? Can I use a new kitchen sponge with the scotchbrite? Thanks for your input.

Just rinse it good. You can scrape off calcium and stuff with a razor. Don't use scotchbrite. If its REALLY REALLY bad and nasty use a TINY bit of bleach and make sure it is rinsed and air/sun dried a few times before you start using it.

You can use a bleach solution. Bleach diluted in water. Then scrubb it down. After that, rinse it really well and then place it in the sun to dry completely.

That or you could use vinegar or baking soda.

Other than those, dont use any chemicals or detergents. And make sure its rinsed off really well and air dried completely.

i think vinager works good for removing all the left over sw crud

I would say use a vinegar and water solution or a very thin bleach and water solution, but be sure to rinse extremely well and air/sun dry before using the tank. Then use a lil lemon juice to clean your hands Or you could always use rubber gloves.

Thanks for the input. I actually found a algae remover pad that I used with water that worked great. All it took was a little water and elbow grease. It looks as good as new!
