I bought a piece of malaysian driftwood at the LFS and i can't get the damn thing to sink.... we had a couple heavy rocks to keep it submerged but even after like 2-3 days it hadn't sunk yet! It still wants to float.... any ideas that might help???? Send em my way! Thanks:WHOA:

You will more then likely have to drill it and bolt it to slate. Then bury the slate in the gravel.

I have read that the wood becomes saturated and sinks. Must take years if possible...because I have literally soaked pieces for months without them ever sinking on their own.

one way to speed up things is to put the driftwood in some really hot wather -near boiling or as hot as you can get it- for 10-20 minutes. Then soak it in cold wather for a day or two. Suposedly this should open the pores and let air out and wather in to better saturate the wood. Last month I did this to 3 rather large pices and 2 are staying put and one still needs a stone ... So it might not work every time ;)

A friend of mine bought a piece of that orange driftwood they sell for lizards... of course it floated and stained the water with tannins, but after boiling it in a few changes of water, it now sinks.

Wood sinks when the air in the cells is replaced with water... submerging it in water under a vacuum gets rid of it, but not everyone can do that. Drilling and attaching it to slate is a sure-fire way to get it to sink.

How do you drill a hole into slate without cracking the it?

yea boil it and if its really large do what i did... buy a trashcan and boil like 7 pots of water at the same time and pour it in and if you dont have enough water boil somemore cause the water will still be hot in the trash can.... worked fine for me

lol.....i left one floating in the tank for 10 months

just superglue a bolt of the right size and length to a piece of slate and then drill a hole in the drift wood and bolt it or add glue to the threads of the bolt and slide the drift wood over and you wont have to see a nut.
