All of the above and dark substrate. I used to use white sand, but it seemed to wash out some of my fish. I changed to dark sand (small gravel in one tank), and the color came back in no time.

I agree. Darker substrates tend to show off fishes colors much better than light ones. Lots of cover will make them feel more secure and theyll color up fast. Make sure to vary the diet alot as well. Lots of frozen, live or fresh foods make a big difference too.
