I tried starving him out as a baby occasionally throwing pellets and tilapia fillet and all that accomplished was a dirty tank lol so any advice would help. thnks.

Here is what i did with mine. First stick with floating pellets. When you feed only allow 5 minutes for him to eat then remove food. This also in a way lets him know he only has limited time to eat. the best approach IMO will be to make shure he ate a good meal or his regular food. Then the next day start trying the pellets. It can take time for him to start on pellets. Ime gars can go awhile without food one of my florida gars stopped eating for almost 2 months. Scared the crap out of me, but fine ever since. Having a good current at the top of your water also helps, the fast movement of the pellets will help trigger feeding response. once he starts taking pellets then start working on the talipia. Just give it time and dont get discouraged he will eat them. Good luck.

Oh i should have mentioned make shure the pellets are not too large. Gars dont really chew their food they like to swallow it whole so make shure they are a size that can be swallowed. With the talipia cut intostrips and maybe easier to use feed with tongs at least till they get used to it.

First off, how big is your gar? I wouldn't worry about feeding it pellets until the gar is at least 8-10". Before that I would just free feed the gar, meaning letting it eat when and as much as it wants. You don't want to end up stunting your gar.
