OK, im building a 12ft longx4ft widening out to 10ftx4ft deep (its a triangle), and as most of you might know im from the UK and it gets fairly cold over here, so i was wondering if you guys had any ideas of how to heat it but keep my electricity down, and how i could build a "greenhouse" over it, i was thinking of say a 1ft high wall all the way around that is insulated and then a roof that i could put on at night and take off in the day when it is warm. so basicaly like a big tupperwear box over the top, and ideas guys and gals?
thanks

I insulated my pond with sheets of styrofoam on the bottom and all sides. Then I simply covered it with a double sheet of visqueen (clear plastic covering). Granted, it doesn't get nearly as cold in Lousiana as the UK, but the clear covering acted as a solar blanket, allowing sunlight/heat in and trapping it. My pond stayed a nice 80 degrees F all winter with this and a 300 W heater ...

OK thanks, but how big was your pond? and did it have gold fish in? or tropical fish?

About 325 gallons. It had tropicals. Of course, down here we only get about 5-6 nights each winter that even reach freezing, so I don't know how feasible this is for you. If you get snow, for example, your ground temperature could get much lower than ours ever will.

well we dont always get snow, but sometimes (even then its very little not even 2cms) and my pond is gonna be like 2000gals, wot material did you use to cover the top?
