I recently got a female jag to mate with my male. As soon as I put her in the tank they started flaring and changing colors and lockjawing. Theyve been doing this for 30 minutes now. But it seems a little rough to be breeding.

they are testing eachother to try and determine if they'd like to pair up. Think of it as dating :) but keep a close eye, the male may decide he does not like the female and kill her if left alone for too long.

Well, after awhile he started beating her up bad, then she went to the corner. Then they went at it again, now shes behind the filter again. Any chance they will still pair up?

Possible. Sounds like he doesnt like the female you got him very much. Some fighting is ok, but if she stays in a top corner behind a filter or something then she's probably given up.
