How do I know If im a fish keeping expert?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Umm well....lol
If you have to ask id say no. Ive been keeping fish for most of my life or helping keep fish that's 40+ years at that point most would claim themselves experts, I do not. I know quite a bit and have kept alot of fish but I'm no expert. I think when people start calling themselves experts is when the fun ends.
Ahh alright thankyou.

If you host a youtube channel featuring videos of your tank with some commentary then you're automatically an expert.

Also if youre a recipient of a gold tier MFK award then youre also definitely an expert. Not silver or bronze though, those are just aspiring experts. If you don't have any awards, like myself, then you're just a wannabe.

Lol

Are you wanting to know if you are an expert because you want to know if you’re that knowledgeable or are you wanting to keep a fish that has been deemed only suitable for “experts”?
Also judging by your posts I would say you are not an expert nor ready to keep a fish that has been deemed suitable for only experts.

I know for a fact that neither RD. RD. or duanes duanes would consider themselves experts in the field of fishkeeping (they're both way too modest for that :grinno: ). However, in certain areas i'd say they're both probably pretty close to achieving perfection.

So if they're not experts then that puts paid to anyone else around here who has lofty ideas abut their own credentials.

Are you referring to the latest advertising trend on liveaquaria of "EXPERT ONLY" fish? I noticed that too.

There are quite a few fish I'd consider expert level based on a few things.
Size very big id say over 30" or very small under 2" things like filtration issues come to mind for either.
Aggression level
Basic needs that differ from "common fish keeping practices"
This doesnt nessicarily mean you need to be an "expert" to keep them all just good common sense and willingness to do what is right for the animal.

You are a fishkeeping expert if you can keep fish without killing them from poor water quality or poor tankmates.

Ofcoarse there are fish that are only expert level. I think stuff that could possibly maim or kill or other wise injure you or other in your house during common interactions.
Electric eel comes to mind.
Large puffers, arapima, lionfish, toadfish, rabbitfish, rays, sharks, arowana, wolffish could be added if you are not aware of the possible threat they provide. Like large reptiles they are dangerous.

In no way is this list exclusive or the only way some dummy could be hurt by fish....lol
