I bought a 3,5 inches male JD to put with my 4 inches female yesterday. I am conscient that the chances of creating a pair that way are low.

Things went pretty good yesterday since the female seemed to accept the male : standing side by side, little liplocking, staying together behing a piece of driftwood.

Things are not the same this morning since the female is chasing quite hard the male around the tank.

Is it normal ? Did the pairing up failed ? How do I know it worked.

The tank is 65 gallons.

P.S. Sorry for the double post in the set up forum.

Good chance if they are already being together only after a day. Mine took a couple weeks before they even would go any where near each other. Good luck!!!

The universal sign of rejection is a fish in the top corner of the tank. If you see that, take action.

Here is a little update of my Jack Dempsey pairing attempt.

Day 1.
I introduced a 3,5-inche male Jack Dempsey in my 4-inche female tank. The tank is a 65 gallons filtered by one Eheim 2217 and two Eheims 2213. Things went pretty good : the female seemed to accept the male, they stood side by side behind a piece of driftwood, swam togheter and did a little liplocking.

Day 2.
Things went bad. The female started to chase the male pretty bad resulting in some minor injuries at his pelvien, pectoral and caudal fins. The male ended the day by staying in the uper back corner of the tank. At that moment, I was sure that the pairing attempt failed since Baldtaxguy wrote : "The universal sign of rejection is a fish in the top corner of the tank. If you see that, take action". My plan was to set up a new tank for the male the next morning.

Day 3.
It seems that Jack Dempseys are bipolar; the situation changed drastically on day three. The two fish are now sharing the tank with no major agression issues. The female is more independant than the male who is following her no matter where she swims. She still has some agressive reflexes but the male just stands his ground without fleeing. In general, they stay together ... In fact, the male stays with the female telling her : "I'm not impressed by you anymore".

Questions.

What is happening ? What is the female Dempsey's role in the pairing ? What is the male's ? How can I tell if the pairing is successful ?

It is the first time I try to pair Jack Dempseys and did not find any good information on the subject. Tell me what you know on Jack Dempsey pairing or, if relevant, on any CA/SA cichlids pairing.

Thanks

In the animal kingdom, usually males do the impressing and females are the ones who pick their partners. The fact that the female rejected the male might show that she doesn't show interest in him. Don't take my word for it because I'm just as clueless about it as you. I've been trying to get my JDs to pair for the longest time now too, but they've made no progress. It all comes down to the fish choosing it themselves.

I could be too that female being larger than male she may not see him as a suitable mate at this time sorry did not see part of aggression in original post . Sometimes to read everything before reply.

I don't think anyone here can explain exactly what goes on with pairing 100% of the time... Fish are strange sometimes and that's the appeal. It sounds like they're working it out and I wouldn't worry unless you see actual violence. Keep an eye on it and fingers crossed.

I think the pairing might be completed. No more war even at feeding time. This is where they stand when not swinming togheter in the rest of the tank.
