Hey everyone. I went down to the river today and picked up a bunch of driftwood. How do I make it safe for my aquarium? They are big peices. 30-60 inches have about 8-10 peices. Not going to use all of them but would like to know if I can use them and if so how to make them safe. Ive heard people doing it before. Thank you all.

Some people soak it in bleach and water, and then somehow remove the bleach from the wood. Some people put it in the oven to heat it up and kill off parasites and bacteria, some people boil it. The easiest way in my opinion is just to put it out in the sun to dry out. The idea behind making it "aquarium safe" is to remove parasites and harmful bacteria so they don't leach out of the wood and in to your tank and harm your fish. By putting it out in the Sun it naturally dries out the wood and the UV rays help kill bacteria making it very close to impossible for any bacteria or parasites to live in the wood. This is what I did to my wood, I just left it out in the Sun until it was bone dry (it was already pretty dry). Then I sprayed it all down with the hose and scrubbed it with a Clean and coarse brush. Mainly to remove dirt and dead outer layers of wood that could cloud your tank. The only downside is the wood is going to be very buoyant and hard to keep down, but there is always a way to make it work. I just have mine pinned underneath my filters and the front of my tank so it can't float to the top. I have had zero problems with parasites or anything and my fish are happier than ever since I put my wood in. Hope I could be of help! You can check out some of my tank shots in my previous threads.

Everything Wesley M said is right on. I do pressure wash the wood I use in my tanks although you must be careful not to blast the wood with too high a pressure. I also soak the wood until it is waterlogged. I try to use only hardwood with my favorite being Manzanita. Good luck!
