umm, what are you talking about? a hydrometer is ready to use out the package

put it in water and shake it up, thats what i always did before reading mine to get it unstuck

Fill it up with tank water, take it out & shake off the bubbles that might be on the arm before reading.

what kind of hydrom do you have and what is the lowist reading it has

For BW, you need a hydrometer that starts at FW: 1.000. SeaTest & Instant Ocean make some. I use a refractometer.

i use the coralife deep six pond hydromiter has the green coralife logo the base reeding on it is 1.001 ppt a helpful hint after you are done with your hydromiteer rinse it or salt will buld up at the pivot point and on the needle wich can throw the readins off sppeking from experiance on that.

as cheap as refractors have become id save up a little and get one. i used the needle type once you get a refractor you will wonder why you ever used the others.
