So basically I've decided to redo my tank so at the moment I have an empty 125 gallon and I've done almost everything there is to do in freshwater and I think the most enjoyable part was when I had my mbuna tank, until one day the power went out when I wasn't home.

I love the look of peacocks but their sooooooo expensive or maybe I'm just used to buying my fish for cheap at the local flea market lol so my questions are

How much should I start with?
When I add more what's the minimal number to get?
cause $40 a piece is a bit much for me.
I was thinking I start off with like 3 and add 2 every time I get new ones.

Also how much can I have in a 125 ?

And could I have yellow labs cause from what I hear mixing mbunas and peacocks are a no so I figure if I get yellow labs which are the most easy going in my opinion I won't have a problem with aggression.

Sorry for all the questions I'm a returning freshwater keeper lol I betrayed fresh life for salt a few months ago, was definitely worth it but now I that I got a bigger tank for my saltwater stuff I figured I'd keep the 125 fresh.

Assuming you're going all male, 18-20 fish, with no look a likes. Labs are fine. I add atlesst 4 fish at a time.

Peacocks crossbreed easily and once females are mixed together they are almost impossible to tell apart. This makes it hard to get rid of unwanted fish. You'll need alot of tanks or spend the extra money on sexed fish.

I don't mind the cross breeding doesn't matter to me the fry are going to my big predator tank as feeder fish anyways I just like to watch them breed and see the little babies wander around the place hiding from everyone

Do a mixed gender peacock and hap tank but stock only one peacock species. Think in terms of 5 species with 1m:4f of each for fish that mature <= 6". Just be sure the hap females look completely different (stripes, spots, solid silver, solid dark gray, etc.).

Know that this will give you 5 colored fish and 20 silver/brown fish.

You are not worried about the fry...you are worried about ever being able to sell-give away the adult female peacocks since once they are mixed...you have no idea what species they are.

You make a good point, one of the reasons I left freshwater was the lack of color everything is brown or silver or black I swears lol

So if I were to go all males how much should I start off with, and any websites you guys recommend that's somewhat affordable

For all male think in terms of 18 individuals that mature <= 6". I would not order from anyone but Dave of Dave's Rare Fish. You get what you pay for, but his prices are reasonable.

Or for affordable and reliable color, go mbuna. 1m:4f and 5 species. Usually like $8 per fish. Choose species with both males and females colorful.
