Here&There
I just did a nitrate test by a leading brand & followed all the instructions. At the end i am sposed to compare color of solution to a chart. Do i look down thru the test tube? or do i look thru side of test tube to measure results? The instructions do not specify. Can I say what brand it is?

Typically, it's the same color whether you look down the open tube or through the side. The trick is in the hue, not the saturation. And yes, you can say API here.

With API the color difference between 20 & 80 ppm is so subtle that, to my eye, it does affect the color depending on which way u look.

Try to find someone with better vision. It's entirely possible you have mild color blindness and don't know it. The various hues of red are actually detected better by the female eye. Males are better at green, in general. Just a thought.

That's hillarious. They should put that in the instructions. WTB someone without colorblindness and 20/20 vision. Just went to eye doc 10 days ago and always pass color blindness test with flying...colors. Maybe I'll let my wife try. Thanks

We have both a swimming pool and fish tanks. I'm color blind (red/green) - there are different types of color blindness. The chemical testing for both tanks and swimming pools is based on color. What I do is check the reading regularly, but I'm doing it based on how the "shading, lightness to darkness" appears. Then once a week to once every two weeks I have my wife double check my readings to make sure I'm not 'drifting' into dangerous readings. And my vision is actually 20/15, if I could just read one more letter on the lower line it would be 20/10!!! but it doesn't help with colors

Do what I do and keep changing till you know for sure. I'm not happy till it's a somewhat orange color..

ditto . . . I gave up on trying to identify the different shades of red, but orange or yellow is easy . . . so if it is red, that means I have some work to do . . .

I know what you mean about the red color, if you let light pass through it looks lighter. If you hold the tube up to the card it looks darker. So as others say I prefer to just see Orange.

ya i've always struggled with Nitrates b/c all the different shades of orange are so close IMO i can't tell if it's 5 or 20 ppm sometimes. lol.
