I have 5 tiny red belly piranhas in a 55g. A pleco, and a couple of mollys.
I did a 20% water change yesterday and everything seemed fine. I did notice the biggest of the 5 (four are like 3/4 inch and hes like 1 1/4) was in the corner by himself and stayed there for what I saw yesterday. Had a nip on his fin but didnt notice anything else. I woke up this morning and he floating in the middle of the tank and looked extremely lazy and had sort of a white film over him. It wasn't ick but something was wrong. I couldnt do anything at the time cuz I was very late to class so couldn't do anything till a couple hours later. Came home he was back in the corner and I tried feeding them. All of them attacked the piece of fish and the flakes but he just sat there. A flake hit him in the face and he bit it then spit it out and kept sitting there. I took him out and put him in a Q.

Two Questions.
How should I treat him? and Should I salt or do anything with the 55?

Sorry for the long post, and any help is appreciated.

you should have salt in there anyway...i would say add salt.. (mix it first) and raise the temp to about 84..they will be a lil more aggressive tho

you always have salt in yours? how much salt? like 1 tsp per 10g ? or 1 tbsp?

haha ya I wasnt planning on addidng salt out of the cupboard. I just wasnt sure if I should add more than the instructions on the back.

when i had some a long time ago i used melafix and 1 tsp salt raised the temp to 86 did 25% water changes every other day adding back in the salt and melafix taken out prior to the water change, my rbps got better in about a week, oh and i took the carbon out of my filtering system, i know this is simliar to ick treatment but it worked for me.

wow you guys take really aggressive steps, It really doesnt make sense to me why everyone changes there tank conditions so dramatically to help there fish. I think it would just stress them out even more. IMO i would keep the temp consistant and continue with water changes. Do some research on fish disease and treat accordingly. Salt is very controversial but many experienced fish keepers swear by it so i am not going to tell you not to, i have always treated my fish the same way and has always been very sucessful. if you you dont have any live plants i would also turn the lights off for a couple days. Continue to feed but in smaller amounts salt if you want but find out exactly what is wrong before you decide if you want to medicate or not. Piranhas are tough fish take your time and use common sense and your little p should pull through.
