how do I use an airstone with a sponge filter?
I have never used a sponge filter before. I want to add oxygen to the water but decided to do it with a sponge filter. The hydro says to attach an airstone but how do I know what one to get?

If it's one of the hydro brands ones then you'll need a small airstone such as these to put on the end of your airhose and then just drop it into the tube sticking out of the sponge. http://www.amazon.com/Elite-1-Inch-...?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1326681989&sr=1-2 There are other brands that had the 1/8" plug to stick the airhose directly to. Either way it will oxygenate your water, though the ones with the airstone might be a little more effective at it. If you haven't bought the sponge filter yet then I've had good luck using these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-pcs-Bio-S...566?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbfaaff96 That style doesn't require the airstone to work.

If you don't use an airstone with the hydro sponge it makes big loud bubbles instead of little quiet ones. Plus I think the bunch of little bubbles pulls water through more evenly and steadily.

If you take the sponge apart on the inside at the opposite side from where you attach the air line from the pump there's a place to connect an air line. Cut a piece about an inch long and connect it there and connect an air stone to the other end. Reassemble the sponge filter and connect it to your pump, place in tank, and you're ready to go.

Hydro sponges definitely do not require an airstone IME. I have ever seen a sponge filter that required an airstone.
the hydros dont but ive seen homemade and cheaper brands that need them, justputthe stone on theend of the hose.

I have it set up with the airstone. I had to put floating plants to stop the air bubbles popping water onto my light. I can't tell that any water is being pulled through. Little floating bits near the sponge don't seem to get pulled in. Does it take awhile to saturate the sponge?

Without the airstone it is loud. Sounds like a scuba diver in a bathtub.
