How do the people on tanked do it.....

They switch off the camera ;)
No joke, lot's of the tanks featured on that show collapsed after a few days and all the fish died.

on the first episode of the second show they said they were adding cycled water. but that makes no sense, I think in reality there's a lot of theatrics going on here, they may put in the fish on a different day from setting up the tanks, or they may even come back to do a proper cycling later on.

There was already a thread like this and about this. A Guy claimed that his wife worked at that orthodontists office and said all the fish died and it's all scripted and the owner was forced to read of a script even though he didn't like the tank decor.

I have always added fish to my tanks the very day that they are setup. Never lost a fish b/c of it either. You need fish in the tank to get the cycle going anyway( I know you can use ammonia but really, why would you?) Fill tank, add fish and just monitor the levels and don't over feed, no big deal.
